1. A.C.W.A. Combatives

A.C.W.A. Combatives, located in Richardson, focuses on reality-based self-defense training. They believe that self-defense should be practical, easy to learn, and address the real-life safety problems we face today. Their instruction includes both physical and mental skills designed to work for everyone. They offer various self-defense seminars, general self-defense classes, women-only classes, and classes for kids.

2. Action Self Defense

Action Self-Defense offers self-defense classes taught by the owner and 9th-degree black belt, Grandmaster Diane Reeve Kirby. She is assisted by Grandmaster Tim Kirby. Tim is the youngest 9th-degree black belt in Allen Steen’s brand of Texas karate. At Action Self Defense, you can take women’s self-defense classes, group self-defense classes, or sign up for private lessons. Atlasi Martial Arts Academy is an officially recognized school in Tae Kwon Do and is run by its chief instructor, Mr. Arrash Atlasi, a 5th-degree black belt from the International Tae Kwon Do organization. This studio teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and they operate under the belief that Jiu-Jitsu is a lifelong journey. Students begin with an introductory class to learn the big-picture strategy of Jiu-Jitsu. From there, they move into four months of training in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Fundamentals class. Grip Game Jiu-Jitsu was started by Coach J.J. “Choctaw” Thompson in 2006 after he recognized a need for a legitimate Jiu-Jitsu gym in the Texoma area. They offer Jiu Jitsu, kickboxing, and women-only kickboxing classes at Grip Game Jiu Jitsu. They also have Jiu Jitsu classes for kids who want to learn self-defense.

Rockstar Martial Arts in North McKinney offers a few options for those wanting to take self-defense classes. They teach Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a form of Jiu Jitsu developed in 1925 by the Brazilian Gracie family. This type of Jiu Jitsu was formed based on the idea that smaller, weaker individuals can defeat larger, stronger attackers when utilizing these techniques. They offer adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes and women-only Brazilian classes. They also have anti-bully classes and martial arts classes for kids.

Model Mugging’s name comes from the Role Model Mastery work by psychologist Albert Bandura. They offer two-day full-weekend defense classes led by a female and male instructor team to model the victim/assailant dynamic.
