About Sherman

The town of Sherman, Texas is located about 60 miles north of Dallas and boasts a population of just over 46,000 residents. After Texas joined the United States, its first state legislature was tasked with organizing new counties. They authorized Grayson County in November 1846. The Grayson County commissioners founded Sherman as the county seat. Sherman was named after General Sidney Sherman, who fought in the Battle of San Jacinto.

Grayson County has been home to several notable residents, including musician Buck Owens and President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was born in nearby Denison, Texas. Sherman is best known today for its many historic buildings, vibrant arts community, and numerous opportunities for outdoor exploration and recreation.

True to its motto Classic town. Broad horizon., Sherman is a town steeped in history and tradition, and there are many opportunities to learn about and participate in the history. Take a visit to the Austin College campus, located in East Sherman. Austin College is the oldest higher education institute that is still under its original charter. After that, take the two-minute drive to the Square in downtown Sherman, the site where the original residents of Sherman gathered for town meetings, Sunday church, and court. Also in downtown Sherman is A Touch of Class Antique Mall, one of the best antique shops in Sherman and all of North Texas.

It is housed in a nearly 150-year-old building that is a Texas Historic Landmark. It has three floors, over 150 vendors, and two museum exhibits: the Historical Exhibit Room of Grayson County and the Outlaw Trails Museum. If those exhibits don’t do it for you, you could also check out the Sherman Museum, the Sherman Jazz Museum, or the Perrin Air Force Base Historical Museum. For an immersive experience, check out Frontier Village and see the preserved historic homes of the early Grayson County settlers.

The historical event that is a local favorite is the Battle of the Axe, the longest high school football rivalry in Texas. This game between Denison High School and Sherman High School is always a nail-biter. Many alumni travel home each year to see who will take home the coveted Ye Old Battle Axe (and yes, it is a literal axe).

Part of Sherman’s charm is that there is always something to do. You can check out a show put on by the Sherman Community Players. Also, music lovers are in heaven in Sherman. During the summer, many different bands play in Sherman’s Hot Summer Nights free concert series and Denison’s Music on Main. For a classy evening, you can head over to Kidd-Key Auditorium and watch the Sherman Symphony Orchestra. 30 minutes north of Sherman is Choctaw Casino and Resort, where you can catch big-name artists in concert, gamble, and stay in their luxury hotel. It’s even fun for the whole family with the addition of The District, an area separate from the casino with arcade games, bowling, and a movie theater.

Another great thing about the Texoma area is the many opportunities to get into nature. With over 16 parks just in Sherman, there’s no shortage of trails to explore. You can play disc golf at the Pecan Grove Disc Golf Course, hike the tree trail at Herman Baker Park, and visit The Splash family aquatic center at Fairview Park. Eisenhower State Park is a great destination for avid campers and is right on Lake Texoma’s shores. Lake Texoma itself covers nearly 75,000 acres with 550 miles of shoreline. The lake offers fishing, boating, beaches, camping, and more.

There are many incredible local restaurants in Sherman and the surrounding area. Grab a morning coffee at CJ’s, lunch at Sage Café, a drink at The Wig and Gavel Public House, a burger at MG’s, and have date night at The Library Bar & Grill. For other Sherman resources, check out the Sherman Chamber of Commerce’s website here.

As dedicated Sherman personal injury attorneys and auto accident attorneys, we of course know where the best hospitals in the area are located. There are two main hospitals in Grayson County. Texoma Medical Center is located in Denison, right off Highway 75, and Wilson N. Jones Regional Medical Center is located in the heart of Sherman. Other emergency care facilities in Sherman are PrimaCare Med Center and ER of Texas.
