Don't Delay In Seeking Medical Treatment

In the immediate aftermath of a crash, adrenaline can take over. It pumps through our veins and can mask the severity of injuries we have suffered. Many times, it is only after our body has processed the adrenaline that we begin to truly feel the severity of the pain. We have had several clients come in to our offices with significant injuries that were not immediately apparent. By way of example, one such client recounted her story of being involved in a crash and going to the emergency room two days later when her neck pain continued to worsen. After reviewing several x-rays, her emergency room doctor returned to our client’s room and reported that she had fractured her neck. We have also had numerous clients that have suffered head injuries during a crash that do not end up seeking treatment until days or even weeks later when their post-concussion symptoms become unbearable.

When it comes to an insurance adjuster evaluating your injury claim, one of the first things they will look at is the amount of time between the crash/injury and when the injured party first sought medical treatment. For those individuals that are taken from the scene in an ambulance, this is not an issue as they are being treated immediately. Other victims are driven by a friend or loved one directly to the hospital from the scene. Where the delay in treatment really comes into play is when an injured party chooses not to go to the emergency room right away as they do not view their injuries as life-threatening or their adrenaline is masking the true extent of their injuries. Instead, they want to take a conservative approach and hope the pain subsides without medical help. Other times, this is a purely financial decision in that the victim knows they cannot afford an expensive emergency room visit. Despite these valid reasons, insurance adjusters love to argue that any delay in seeking medical treatment “proves” the victim’s injuries were not very serious.

If you find yourself or a loved one in this position, your best course of action is to immediately contact a knowledgeable personal injury attorney to counter these very arguments. At Snellings Law PC, we have devoted our entire practice to helping those who have been injured due to someone else’s negligence.
