This year, Snellings Law has worked to increase the health and safety of North Texans through our health initiative and service projects. Many of our team members’ favorite workouts are running. To spread this love for running in our community, our firm is sponsoring the Celina Turkey Trot this Thanksgiving holiday.
Many of us enjoy running for its physical and mental benefits. However, running also comes with risks if proper precautions aren’t taken. As personal injury attorneys, we know the toll an injury can take on your body, mind, and finances. By being proactive and following safety guidelines, you can significantly reduce your risk of injury while running. Our goal is to help you stay informed and prepared, so you can focus on enjoying your runs and join us at the Turkey Trot later this November.
In this blog, we’ll outline key safety tips for runners that can help you navigate common hazards and minimize your risk of injury. From choosing safe routes to wearing appropriate gear, we’ll provide you with practical advice to keep you protected. Whether you’re a daily runner or just starting out, integrating these safety measures into your routine can make all the difference.
1. Know Your Route
Before you lace up your running shoes, make sure you are familiar with the path you plan to take. Knowing your route helps tremendously in preventing injuries while running. If you’re familiar with your route, you can prepare for rough terrain and steer clear of hazards. You’ll also be better prepared if any new challenges are on the road.
Make sure your route is in a well-lit, populated area. This is especially important if you plan to run in the early morning or at night. Avoid unclear paths and poorly lit areas where cars may not be able to see you. Whether you prefer to run in nature or through the city, there are many running trails in North Texas you can check out.
Also, you should always check the weather before you head out on a run. Knowing the weather forecast will allow you to prepare for oncoming weather conditions with proper gear. Getting caught in unpleasant or dangerous weather can be a huge safety risk. Rain, snow, and ice can create slippery terrain and increase your chances of an injury.
2. Adequately Hydrate and Fuel Before You Run
Dehydration is extremely dangerous and can lead to fatigue, dizziness, and heat-related illnesses. Drinking water before, during, and after a run is significant. When you run, you lose a lot of water and salt. Replenishing that loss is critical to keeping you safe and healthy. Carry a water bottle or use hydration packs to stay refreshed if you go on long runs.
Running puts a lot of exertion on your body. To support that, you need to properly fuel before a run. Ensure your diet comprises complex carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats. Eating a snack or a small meal 30 minutes to an hour before a run can give you the energy you need. After a run, eating a meal with high protein and complex carbs can help your muscles recover.
3. Stretch Before You Run
It’s important to prepare your body for a run. Running is strenuous on your muscles. Stretching helps increase blood flow to your muscles, boosting your circulation and reducing the risk of strains.
You never know when you’ll encounter a hazard while running. Stretching helps prepare your body for any last-minute, quick movements you may have to make on your route. Stretching also increases your flexibility and range of motion. With more flexibility, you can improve your stride and make your run more comfortable. Enhancing your range of motion can also help you run more efficiently and improve your form.
Overall, stretching greatly improves your chances of avoiding an injury while running. The best stretches to do before beginning a run are dynamic stretches. Dynamic stretches involve repetitive motions to gradually stretch out your muscles. Dynamic stretches such as side lunges, high knees, and arm swings are much better for runners than static stretches such as touching your toes.
4. Wear Proper Gear
Staying visible to other pedestrians and drivers is important for ensuring your safety while on a run. Wearing bright, reflective clothing can increase your visibility, giving other pedestrians and drivers a better chance of seeing and avoiding you. If you run at night or in the early morning, accessories such as reflective vests, headlamps, or armbands can increase your visibility even more.
Also, if you anticipate harsh weather on your run, dressing appropriately can help you avoid injury or sickness. Wear lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing in hot weather to stay hydrated. In cold weather, layer your clothing to stay warm and dry, and consider wearing gloves, a hat, and thermal socks. Proper attire helps you maintain comfort and prevent weather-related injuries.
The most important gear for a runner is their shoes. Investing in high-quality running shoes can be extremely beneficial for your health. A high-quality running shoe can help prevent muscle and joint problems. Good running shoes have adequate support, cushioning, and stability to give you the most comfort and protection while you run.
5. Follow Traffic Laws
As pedestrians, it’s important to follow all traffic laws to ensure your safety. Using crosswalks and sidewalks is key to avoiding getting hit as a runner. If you must run on the road, run facing the opposite of traffic. Running against traffic allows you to see oncoming vehicles and react more quickly if needed.
When crossing the street, make sure to look both ways. You don’t have the right of way if you’re not crossing at a crosswalk with a protected green light. Make sure the coast is clear before crossing, and keep looking both ways as you cross. When crossing at a crosswalk, make eye contact with drivers to confirm that they see you.
As a pedestrian, you are most vulnerable to catastrophic injuries in a pedestrian accident. Getting hit in a pedestrian accident can result in serious injuries such as broken bones, traumatic brain injuries, and spinal cord injuries. These injuries can require extensive medical treatment and lifelong care. Following traffic laws is the best way to avoid pedestrian accidents and catastrophic injuries.
6. Run with a Buddy
There is safety in numbers, so try running with a buddy. Having an extra set of eyes on the trail can help you avoid potential threats or hazards. It can also be beneficial in an emergency. Establish a plan with your buddy for emergencies and ensure that you both know who to contact if something goes wrong. If you prefer to run alone, tell someone your route and when you expect to return home.
In addition to increasing your safety, a running buddy can also help you stay motivated when you run. Having someone to hold you accountable and encourage you in your health journey is helpful. Having someone with you on your runs who shares the same health goals can help take you to the next level and make running more fun.
7. Listen to Your Body
If you’re active, you know the importance of listening to your body when you’re working out. Your body will show you signs if you are overly fatigued, dehydrated, or overheated. Pain and discomfort can indicate strains or injuries. Pay attention to these signs and give yourself permission to rest if you need it. Doing so can help prevent injuries and serious health issues in the future.
It’s important also to avoid overtraining. You may be extremely motivated, but your body needs rest to maximize the benefits of your workout. Overdoing it can catch up to you in the long run. Know your limits and give your body time to rest and restore after a run.
8. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings
When running, you must be aware of your surroundings to avoid a pedestrian accident. Focus on your path, but be mindful of other pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. Using your phone or listening to music with noise-canceling headphones can be distracting and hinder your ability to see hazards and approach vehicles. If you need to use headphones while running, keep the volume low and opt for bone-conduction headphones.
Don’t run in areas where you don’t feel safe. If you ever feel unsafe or uncomfortable, trust your instincts and take precautions to protect yourself if needed. Ensure that someone always knows where you are, and ask a friend to pick you up if needed. Your safety comes first.
